THE JOURNEy

Mrs. Neerja Birla, Chairperson, Aditya Birla Education Trust has always encouraged us to explore a diverse range of opportunities for our children. Under her direction, Infinity, an inter school mathematics competition was conceived as a springboard to accelerate the immense potential, the sheer love and joy of Mathematics that our children have.

In 2014, Mrs. Radhika Sinha (Principal at Aditya Birla World Academy) and Mr. Prodipta Hore (Head of Faculty of Mathematics and Coordinator of International Initiatives at Aditya Birla World Academy) proposed the idea of organizing an Inter-School mathematics competition to be held in Aditya Birla World Academy.

Their brainchild had a simple objective; having fun while doing Mathematics. The idea was to foster a feeling of love for the subject through fun rounds, both at individual and at team level and also to bring together a community of Mathematics’ teachers and students on a platform where they could learn from each other.

The two-day format was designed to promote cultural exchanges between students along with a spirit of healthy competition keeping students engaged through varied rounds. The different rounds of the competition are: Individual Round, Team Round, Pass back Round, Bulb Your Ideas, Mathematics Treasure Hunt and Quiz.

The competition is held in association with Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences, Pilani. Every year, the Mathematics team at Aditya Birla World Academy along with the professors from BITS puts together the rules and questions for the rounds, reviews and finalizes the questions and plans all the details of the competition. The competition is guided by the mathematicians - Dr. James Tanton, Dr. Mark Saul and Dr. I. K. Rana.

It was our dream to make this competition of true international spirit and promote fondness for Mathematics far and wide. The participation of schools in the local city started growing and Infinity became a National competition in the subsequent years. In the year of its inception, 2014, 12 schools from Mumbai participated in the competition. There after every year the number has only increased. The year 2020 saw participation from 34 schools across the globe. As a result, this year’s competition has been divided into two levels. The Zonal level - which will be further divided as National Zonal and International Zonal followed by Finals level - with participants comprising only the winning teams from the Zonal level.

Some key objectives of designing this competition include:

* to develop the capacity and thinking skills of students, whose value far transcends mathematics;

* to formulate questions and rounds that constitute effective ways of discovering and nurturing mathematical talent;

* to help students combat the prevalent false image of mathematics being a rather difficult or dull and tedious subject.

We look forward to the enthusiastic participation of your school in INFINITY 2022!
